Ralliers Tell Their Stories

This year, several of our ralliers wrote us to tell us of the fun they had on the passage.  We thought you would like to read about them:

  • Chip and Nan Davison from Boothbay, ME on Winsome, a Dawn 48 ketch are first-time ralliers, but experienced offshore sailors.
  • Rosemary Thomas from Middletown MD on Crazy Horse, a Sundeer 60 gives a wife's perspective. Rosemary, her husband Bill, and son Matt are joining the WorldArc to complete a circumnavigation. Crazy Horse was First-To-Finish in this year's rally

Read about Crazy Horse, Brown-Eyed Girl, and Ocean Jasper in the World Arc.

First powering over the start line was Crazy Horse, crewed by the Thomas family; Bill, Rosemary and Matt. The Sundeer 60 was closely followed by the Sweden Yacht Ciao, owned by Sreco and Olga Pust, the Swan 76 Wild Tigris, and the Amel Super Maramu Brown Eyed Girl.

  • Jenny McNamara with husband Charlie from Tulsa, OK on Lady, a Catalina 470, have lived aboard their boat cruising the Eastern Seaboard for two years.
  • Gail Bowdish, an Ocean Master in the Caribbean 1500 having completed more than seven events with us was a crew member on Joy For All, a Faar 50, owned by Gil and Joy Smith from Glastonbury, CT.
  • Steve Ormond crewed on Lady.  This was his first year as a volunteer crew member in the rally.
  • Brian Duff from Annapolis MD sailed his Brigantine One World with a crew that included his wife and six-year old son.
  • Danny and Yvonne Simms on their Amel Super Maramu, Ocean Pearl, hail from New Zealand and joined the rally after spending the summer cruising the East Coast of the U.S.
  • Rick and Julie Palm from Cushing ME completed their fifth Caribean 1500, this time on Altair, a Saga 48. They sailed in the first Caribbean 1500 in 1990 before completing a circumnavigation.

Life At Sea During the Caribbean 1500

“Our family-based crew - with additional support from Ian McLean and Dwight Hawkins - worked tirelessly to keep the boat moving fast and on course.  While we sailed on port tack the entire journey, there were many sail changes, regular trimming, and much hand steering as we worked our way down the rhumb line in following seas.

“There are some fabulous sailors and terrific boats in the rally and it is a great honour for us to have achieved this overall result.”
