Congratulations to Elusion

Overall Handicap Winner, of this year's event.

Kirt Schuldt and his crew on Elusion, a Hallberg-Rassy 49 ketch, led the competition, correcting over First-Over-the-Line Between the Sheets by 38 minutes.  Elusion also placed first in the Rally Class 3 competition. Tom and Diane Might's Between the Sheets, a Hallbery Rassy 62, also took first place in the Performance Cruiser Class (Rally Class 1).

Tom and Harriet Linskey on Hands Across the Sea, a Dolphin 460 Catamarin received the Doublehanded Award.

The Adams Family on Imagine won the fishing award. Imagine is a Hallberg-Rassy 46.

Ken and Janet Slagle with crew member Aaron Galvin won the Tempest Trophy, emblematic of the “Spirit of the Caribbean 1500”. Aquila, a Santa Cruz 52, stood by Clover III, a Swan 56, while the crew stabilized the boat after losing a headstay. Clover III was able to motor to Bermuda for repairs without assistance. In addition to the Tempest Trophy, Aquila took a second place in the Performance Cruising Class.

John and Susan Bankston and crew on Watercolors, an Outbound 44, topped Rally Class 2.

The heavy weather played to Elusion's favor. I kept lying to her by telling her she was heading home to the North Sea (the home of Hallberg-Rassy). On top of that I had an excellent crew. Colin truly is a master sail trimmer. Dwight followed so close to him that I thought they were brothers and Tom did his part in keeping up the team. As captain, I appreciated having a great crew who rose to meet and help solve every problem which arose, and allowed me to be chief cook and bottle washer much of the time. There was never an incident that was not handled in a professional, safe manner. The winds being at 20 plus most of the time helped greatly. What is really nice to see is even an old Granddame, like Elusion, in the hands of good sailors still has a dance or two left in her. Gayle and I can hardly wait to get back down and enjoy the islands.
